Premiere Koude Grond

Premiere & Screenings New Documentary

On September 18 a new documentary from Studio Haak & Visser, Koude Grond (Cold Ground) will premiere during Film by the Sea.

I had the honour to write the music for this production

Koude Grond tells the still underexposed history of the Moluccan community in Zeeland. In 1951, thousands of Moluccans - mostly former KNIL soldiers and their families - were shipped to the Netherlands by military order. They believed they would stay only briefly, waiting for the promise of a free Moluccan republic. But that promise was never fulfilled.

A significant number of them were housed in makeshift camps scattered across Zeeland. What began as temporary shelter turned into a hopeless situation. The discontent went unseen and unheard, simmering beneath the surface until it erupted.

Koude Grond portrays the last surviving Moluccans of the first generation: their memories of the Dutch East Indies, the journey, the arrival, and the quiet struggle in Zeeland. At the same time, we see the second and third generations: how do they shape their identity, caught between Moluccan roots and Dutch reality? How does the trauma of their parents echo through their lives? And what remains of the dream of an independent republic?

The premiere is sold out, but tickets are still available for the screenings on September 21 and 23.
