My story

In 2017, at the request of her parents, I wrote a piece for Mattia, their daughter who had taken her own life two years earlier after a long struggle with mental illness.

The première was one of the most powerful experiences of my life. Over six hundred listeners, including many people who shared in Mattia's parents' loss, came together to share their grief.

I have three grown children myself. Sometimes I try to imagine what it would be like to find myself in such a situation, but I know my imagination always falls short. That's exactly why I have boundless admiration for these parents, who managed to turn an indescribable loss into a loving gift to others.

The most beautiful classical music

A month after its release, the piece landed high in the Classical Top 400, a list of the most beautiful classical music, chosen by Dutch radio listeners. It has returned to that list every year since.

I'm deeply grateful for that. This music has also meant a great deal for my career and opened many doors. Sometimes that felt uncomfortable, but time and again Mattia's parents reassured me: Mattia would have loved seeing 'her' music take flight like this.

The sheet music. Now free

There are two versions: the original, just over eight minutes long, and a shortened version of just over four minutes. Out of gratitude for being able to write this music, I'm now giving away the sheet music of the short version for free.

I ask nothing in return. No donation, no email address. It's simply for you.

Pass the comfort on

I hope you find comfort in For Mattia too. Or that it brings comfort to someone you know.

What I'd like to ask of you (though there's no obligation) is to share this page and the sheet music. With your piano students, your fellow pianists, or your fellow amateur pianists. It would be so wonderful if even more people found comfort, emotion and love in this music.

Would you like to pass the comfort on and give the sheet music to someone yourself? Fill this in and you'll get a personal link you can send.

with love,
Douwe

Oh, and if you ever play the piece somewhere, let me know — I'd love to spread the word.

What listeners say

  • Apart from Bach, this is the most moving music I've heard in years.
  • Listened. Deeply moved. I was driving, pulled over and watched the video. It took an hour before I could drive again. Thank you.
  • I didn't know Mattia, but the piece captured her character so well that by the end I had a clear picture of a beautiful person. The ending moved me deeply.
  • I almost never listen to the radio, but I accidentally switched on the old Weber. Suddenly I heard this stunning piece. Thank you!
  • Listened to it for the first time. Seven times in a row. Unique beauty, goosebumps and watery eyes.
